what I typically do is wet the base a little before sticking it to the surface. That seems to help with the suction, particularly if the surface area isn't flawlessly smooth.

another tip is to press down firmly and give it a little revolve once it's in place. That locks the suction better. And yeah, wetting the base slightly does wonders.
